No greetings. Hikari shuddered at the two-line email. Weirdo. He was the one who broke up with her, and now for some incomprehensible reason he was sending her a cryptic email. It wasn’t normal.

Hikari simply ignored it, without even replying. A few days later, she received notice of Yoji’s death. That uncanny chain of events left her spooked. She could still remember that strange discomfort. It felt like a revelatory flash of insight when she was playing a clue-solving game – the feeling she got when several unrelated clues threaded together to lead to one answer.

Proposal.

Betrayal.

And not to forget … his final email.

Sudden death notice.

Trusting in her intuitive response to those clues, she visited the cafe. If she could go back to the past, she concluded, then surely she could change this present. But that hope was dashed.

‘You seem to have taken quite a shock from hearing you can’t change the present,’ remarked Fumiko as she observed Hikari looking despondently at the ceiling.

‘It’s a normal response,’ commented Nagare.

‘Oh, sure.’ Fumiko had first-hand experience: she had travelled back in time herself, to meet her boyfriend who had departed for America. At the time, Fumiko didn’t know any of the cafe’s rules either.

There were five basic rules.

While back in time, you can only meet people who have visited the cafe.

No matter how hard you try while back in time, you cannot change the present.

There is a customer occupying the chair that takes you through time.

You cannot move from the chair.

There is a time limit.
